Hannah Betts: My guide to finding love after 40

Please refresh the page and retry. This is a love story, by someone who had stopped believing in love. A year ago today, I set off for a party and I met someone — a textbook tall, dark, handsome stranger.

We exchanged email addresses, went for a drink, and talked for six hours. We messaged over Christmas, met again in the new year, and somehow, by mid-January, we were together, a togetherness that remains. On the face of things this will not sound unusual, particularly in its timing. Christmas is the most coupled and couple-creating time of year. Those already embroiled feel their hearts swell with sentiment.

Those looking for love sally forth in their glad rags, ready to present their shiniest selves. Come Christmas Eve, single souls everywhere comfort themselves with the frisson of some newly minted flirtation, as they return to their parental homes to sleep in their childhood beds. A flurry of festive romance is as traditional as mince pies; a means of getting through the ghastliness and feeling bullish about the impending year, even as the fantasy fails to outlast Twelfth Night.

It gave me the love-affair narrative, but protected me from any peril — nothing of myself to hazard, meaning significantly less to lose.

I have been in love before, of course, generally indulging twice a decade — deeming any more emotionally incontinent, any less emotionally void. However, over the years, I have loved too young, too hotly, too incompatibly, too unhappily. It came, and was a joy, but a joy that always passed.

Sure, it could be exhausting, but ever-onward one moved. However, that night something shifted. Life offered me a choice, and I made a different one. For, in fact, I met two someones that evening: the one a lewd and lovable drunk, who endeavoured to sleep with me, and was precisely the kind of chap I was used to having truck with; the other, an altogether more sober and reticent individual, whose interest was limited to compelling conversation and gazes so smouldering I blushed.

When we met, a week later, we talked from the moment the bar opened until they threw us out. We emailed until Christmas Eve, when my mother was diagnosed with a terminal cancer. Death has a way of taking us to the nub of things, and, in our mourning, there could be no pretence.

I scorned this attitude, yet neither did I expect to find someone so resplendently fixed. My loved one is the most adult and adjusted individual I have ever encountered, and this forces me to be one too, ditching the mind games I once excelled at in favour of honesty. At 44, how could I be? It could all end tomorrow. However, I have a hunch it may not.

I may always feel singular, but I am no longer ideologically so. I still find the notion of coupledom a challenge, but we would appear to be reinventing it in our own image. And, so, after years of stalwartly solo living, I am learning to fuse my life a little. My partner has a key to my flat. It is the small, quotidian signs of affection that I have learnt to value. The numerous cups of tea he brews; the time I woke outdoors to find him shielding my face from the sun; his carrying my bags from the station after every weekend of grief and body fluids with my mother.

Our relationship is thrilling, yet serene, heady, yet curiously straightforward. He sees my faults and he loves me despite them. I am yet to locate his. But I am changed: a reshaping that saw me through a year of lessons painful and pleasurable, and finds me with mistletoe again. Looking for mature, like-minded singles? Phoebe Maltz Bovy, writing for The Atlantic , makes an excellent point:. A young woman hears from friends and family that she needs to focus on her career or education, not some guy. And this advice is incredibly appealing, a rejection of the quaint notion that female heterosexuality is the desire not for men, but for a white picket fence. And then, suddenly, the message shifts.
