Ralph Cosham narrates this carefully constructed suspense tale of a young solicitor, Arthur Kipps, who is asked to represent his firm at a funeral and collect some important papers.

He sees the woman in black, and she haunts him from then forward. Cosham has a forthright style and adopts the tone of a man who hopes that by telling his tale he might finally rid himself of the memories. He quietly lays out the events without undue drama or embellishment, creating the atmosphere of friends sitting around telling ghost stories. His intensity ebbs and flows as Kipps deals with his anxiety at being haunted by the woman in black. No algorithms here! We pick great audiobooks for you.

It is not until he glimpses a young woman with a wasted face, dressed all in black, at the funeral, that a sense of profound unease begins to creep over him and take hold, a feeling deepened by the reluctance of the locals to talk about the woman in black or what happens whenever she is seen. And Kipps has to stay on in the lonely house, sorting out Mrs. Drablow's papers, when the mist begins to enshroud both it and its surrounding graveyard and the high tide cuts it off from the world beyond. I wasn't overly impressed with this book, either. I didn't dislike it I just wasn't excited by it. I thought Hill did an excellent job of setting a spooky scene.

THE WOMAN IN BLACK

I got this one for Christmas and desperately want to read it. I do love the chill factor. Can't wait to see the film too. Lovely to see you last night too. It was great to meet you too! And yes, this was scary! I think I might relisten to it over the Halloween weekend - just because. I hope the film lives up to the book Finally got a chance to post a comment!

The Woman in Black (Unabridged)

As is so often the case with truly well-constructed fiction, this story contains all the exquisitely crafted detail and richness that film adaptations can struggle to encompass. Only enhanced by Paul Ansell's thoughtful narration, this is Susan Hill at her best. Eel Marsh house stands alone, surveying the windswept salt marshes beyond Nine Lives Causeway.
